Welcome to Mrs. De Leon’s Classroom!

If your child does not yet know how to tie shoelaces, please send them in Velcro or slip-ons.

Please return the field trip permission slip as soon as possible. We have to submit our list of students who are attending by the first week of October. We also have to send a check to the Children’s Museum of Phoenix that week to secure our field trip time and date. If you are not able to pay the $8.00 now, please send the permission slip now and plan to send the $8.00 by the first week of October. We also need chaperones. The museum requires a 5 to 1 student/chaperone ratio. We have a few parents already but we don’t have enough. The first 6 parent volunteers will receive free admission. We do have a fund which we can use to cover a few more if you would like to come but do not have the chaperone fee of $6.00. If you are interested in carpooling, let me know; I will coordinate carpooling for you. Any students who do not return the field trip permission slip will remain at the school on October 23 with the 2nd or 3rd grade class and will complete assignments developed specifically for them. If you don’t want your child to attend the field trip, we will have assignments and activities for them to do while they are at school.

The book order has been sent. Every child will be receiving a book even if you didn’t send an order. If you haven’t ordered and there was something you wanted, I will be submitting the online orders Friday. If you plan to order online, please be sure to do so by Friday late afternoon. The website is www.scholastic.com. Once you are in the parent site, use the following to login.

Things to Remember:

Here are a few things about our classroom that are important to know:

1.       If your child does not yet know how to tie shoelaces, please send them in Velcro or slip-ons.

2.     The PTSO will be sponsoring many events this year, including a spelling bee, a movie night, a yard sale and more. Our first PTSO meeting was August 25th. Please come to the meetings if you can and voice your opinions. The meetings are for parents, students, and teachers to voice their opinions, implement change and initiate events for the students at YPCS. Also, please try to come to the events and support our school.

3.     We are not allowed to serve the children anything consumable. If you would like to bring something in to celebrate your child’s birthday, please consider gift bags filled with pencils and stickers or small gifts of that sort. This year we have 22 children.

4.     Shoes are to be closed at the toe and heel, even on Fridays. Your child will be sent to the office to call you for alternate shoes if open toe or heel shoes are worn. No flip flops.

5.     Only girls are allowed to wear earrings, and only 1 pair of studs. If your daughter is wearing hoop or dangling earrings, she will be asked to remove them or call you for directions.

6.     Please don’t purchase a jacket for your child that is not navy blue. The school uniform code requires a navy blue jacket. Most students purchase navy blue hooded sweatshirts.

7.     Please come on one of the two field trips we will be having this year—or better yet, come to both!

8.     We have an “Extra Funds” jar in our room which will be used to purchase extra supplies if we run out, field trip fees for students who can’t afford it, or other necessary things. If you have pennies you would like to send, we will be collecting loose change all year long.

9.     Please sign the behavior form in your child’s folder every night. This will encourage them to follow the rules. It will also keep you current on their behavior.

10.  Beginning in September, homework will be randomly assigned. Please make sure to check your child’s folder every night for homework assignments. I will not assign homework on Fridays.

Home/School Connection:

If you would like to work with your child on any of the concepts we are focusing on in class, the concepts are below:

We are working on penmanship by writing our names, the ABC’s in both upper and lower case, and the numbers 1 through 20.  We are practicing the sounds of letters by playing the game, “I say the letter, You say the sound.” We are learning to identify the 7 continents on the globe and have started adding with our “adding hands.” We are practicing the alphabet, a few words (I, a, go, no, so, be, me, and we), and a song in sign language. By the end of Kindergarten, your child should also know his/her full name, birthday, and telephone number. This is a state Kindergarten standard, not just a standard for our school. As much as you can practice this information, please do.

New words added to our word list: as, am, is, it, he

Homework: beginning September 28, 2009, we will have homework on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, except for holidays and students who are participating in the after-school program. Last week and this week I have been giving oral homework to have the students practice remembering homework without your help. Once the homework list is sent home and published on this page next week, you will know exactly what homework is due. For the remainder of this week, if they do not remember the homework, they can write the ABC’s, the numbers 1-20, or their name, address and phone number.
